Q. What is glutamine and what does it do?

A. Glutamine is an amino acid. For years glutamine was not thought to be as important an amino acid as the nine essential amino acids are. This belief was mainly due to the fact that glutamine can normally be made in the body. For this reason, it is considered a "non-essential amino acid" and grouped together with the likes of other non-essentials such as L-alanine, glycine and L-tyrosine. But recent data has shown L-glutamine to be so crucial to the body's well being that it is now being touted as the essential "non-essential" amino acid. - Classifying it, unnofficially as a "conditionally essential amino acid" similar to L-histidine. The reason for this is that L-glutamine is involved in processes like: acid-base balance, preserving branched chain amino acids in skeletal muscle, sparing glycogen stores, improved gut maintenance, muscle anabolism, enhanced immune response, improved recovery and faster wound healing.

All of these processes require glutamine's involvement, yet glutamine stores can be compromised by up to 50% if the body undergoes some form of stress. This makes it harder for the body to recover quickly from the stressor, which in turn makes it harder to build new muscle tissue.
