Omega-3 is an essential fatty acid (EFA, also known as a polyunsaturated
fatty acid (PUFA)) that is derived from both animal and plant sources,
although Omega-3 from fish oil is the most common supplemental form.
Fatty acids are the basis of fats and oils, and, despite popular belief,
are necessary for overall health. These fatty acids are termed “essential”
because your body cannot manufacture them by itself. EFA’s must come from
food or supplemental sources. They are also essential because they are
a component of every living cell in the body, and are necessary for
rebuilding existing cells and the production of new cells. Omega-3’s
beneficial effects on the body are too numerous to list here.
NOW Foods Omega-3 is taken from the concentrated fish oils of salmon,
mackerel, sardines, and anchovies. These fish oils are derived from
the whole fish, not just the liver or another body part. We utilize
a low heat process that protects the finished product from oxidation
while removing cholesterol. We also use molecular distillation to
remove any contaminants. There are less than 10 parts per million
(ppm) of heavy metals in our Omega-3, and around 5 IU’s (international units)
of naturally occurring Vitamin E per serving.
